The promise of enterprise resource planning (ERP) was irresistible: Install one all-encompassing program linking VisionTek's disconnected systems -- the supply chain, order-taking, manufacturing, purchasing and customer care, along with e-commerce. The system would give users access to information from all parts of the company, allowing them to check the status of projects at any time.
The computer industry was moving faster every year, customers were demanding more and product life cycles were getting shorter, so companies had to speed up their processes. Thanks to its cautious attitude and advance planning, hundreds of thousands of dollars later, VisionTek's ERP program has become the key to its survival in a cutthroat industry. The software allows the company to shift on a dime in response to market changes, quickly developing and emphasizing new products.
Not all companies have met with the same results. Lincolnshire-based W. W. Grainger Inc., Hartmarx Corp. of Chicago and United Airlines parent UAL Corp. in Elk Grove Township blamed ERP and related information technology system foul-ups for lowered earnings and performance.

Consultants also say failures often begin when companies rush into ERP solutions, vastly underestimating the culture shock involved when a company tries to turn a jumble of disparate processes into one giant brain sharing all its information simultaneously.
